Hikes are easy to moderate with some hills and are held RAIN OR SHINE.

HIKE AT YOUR OWN RISK

 

Bring small pack with water, refreshments, weather-appropriate gear, bug spray and maybe  camera, etc. Pants and sturdy shoes are highly recommended.

#1 Saturday, June 19: Meet at 10 a.m. in parking lot at former Temple Mountain Ski Area on Route 101 east of Peterboro in New Hampshire. Bring lunch and a couple dollars for Miller State Park fee! Leave some cars and shuttle to terminus of Wapack Trail on Old Mountain Road in Greenfield, N.H. Hike south over Pack Monadnock and other peaks with sweeping views in all directions. #2 Saturday, July 3: Meet at 10 a.m. in first parking lot at Windblown X-C Ski Area on Route 123 in New Ipswich, N.H. Leave some cars and shuttle to Temple Mtn. Ski Area on Route 101 east of Peterborough, N.H. Hike south over Temple Mtn. range—look for stone furniture— and back to Windblown, about 7 miles. #3 Saturday, July 17: Bring lunch! Meet at 10 a.m. at Midstate parking lot on Route 119  by Mount Watatic in Ashburnham. From intersection with Rt 101, take Rt 119 west 1.6 miles (opposite Pierce Rd).  Look for hurricane fence; turn into parking lot on right. Leave some cars and shuttle to Windblown X-C Ski Area on Route 123 in New Ipswich, N.H.  Hike on Wapack Trail (same yellow triangles as Midstate) south over Barrett Mtn. and back to Watatic, about 9 miles.  #4 Saturday, July 31: Meet 9 a.m. at trail crossing at Route 12 in Ashburnham. From Route 12 in Fitchburg, heading north toward Ashburnham for 4.9 miles, watch for corner of Jewell Hill Road on right w/ traffic island. Park some cars on Jewell Hill Road and shuttle to trail parking lot on north side of Route 119. Hike south over Fisher Hill and Mount Hunger, 6.7 miles, back to Route 12. #5 Sunday, August 8: Meet NOON  at “graffiti bridge” on Oakmont Ave. in Westminster.  From Boston area, take Rte. 2 west to exit 25.  Turn left on Rte. 2A and take quick left on Town Farm Rd.  Drive about 2 miles to bottom of hill, then right on Oakmont Ave to graffiti bridge.  From Rte. 140 north, cross Rte. 2 overpass and immediately go left onto Town Farm Rd. (see above). Leave some cars here and drive to where trail crosses Route 12 in Ashburnham, parking at Jewell Hill Road. #6 Saturday, August 21: Meet at 9 a.m. in Westminster at Stone Hill Road/Narrows Road. From Boston area take Rte. 2 west, exit 27.  Take left at exit, crossing Rte. 2 onto Narrows Rd. Drive straight to fork at Stone Hill Rd. where trail crosses. From Worcester area, take Rte. 140 north, take right onto Gatehouse Road just before ski area entrance; follow about 2 miles and turn right onto Stone Hill Road, drive to bottom of hill at corner with Narrows Road and park along brook. Leave some cars and drive to graffiti bridge on Oakmont Ave. Hike south, by Round Meadow Pond and Wachusett Village Inn, about 5 miles.  Leaders: Jeanne Gilleney-Decenzo (tel. 508-852-6882) &  Jim Wrightson (tel. 978-852-4800).

 

#7 Saturday, August 28: Meet 9 a.m. at Wachusett Mtn. Ski Area. From Boston area, take Route 2 west to exit 25 onto Route 140 heading south, take right at ski area sign. From Worcester area, take Rte.190 to exit 5.  Go north on Rte. 140 for 9.5 miles to Wachusett Mt. entrance on left. Meet in main parking lot, along edge on the right side, near where trail enters woods. Leave some cars and drive to corner of Stone Hill and Narrows roads in Westminster. Hike south over Crow Hill ledges and by Redemption Rock to ski area, 5 miles.  Leaders  Paul Cully* (tel. 978-692-2498) & Jim Wrightson (tel. 978-852-4800)

#8 Sunday, September 5: Meet NOON at trail crossing at junction of Route 62 and Ball Hill Road in Princeton. From Worcester area follow Route 31 north out of Holden, after Princeton town line take left onto Ball Hill Road and drive to end. From Boston area head west on Route 2 to Fitchburg then south on Route 31. Stay on 31 to Princeton Center then head west on Route 62 for 2.3 miles to Ball Hill Rd. Leave some cars and drive to parking lot of Wachusett Mtn. Ski Area. Hike south over mountain and through Wachusett Meadows Audubon Preserve, 6.2 miles. #9 Saturday, September 11:  Meet at 9 a.m. at Barre Falls Dam. From Rte. 68, take Rte. 62 west for 2.2 miles.  Take left on entrance road, and park in first lot on left, just before dam. Leave most cars and shuttle back down to the corner of Route 62 and Ball Hill Road in Princeton. Those who want a shorter [4+ mile] alternative may leave their car at corner of Route 68 and Intervale Road. Hike south  8.5 miles over back roads and through Ware River watershed. #10 Saturday, September 18: Meet 9 a.m.. on East Hill Road in Rutland. From Rte. 31 in Paxton Center, go west on Rte. 122 for 4.2 miles and turn left onto Pleasantdale Rd.  Go .5 mile and turn right onto East Hill Rd. for almost a mile to Midstate crossing. Leave some cars and shuttle to Barre Falls Dam off Rte. 62 in Barre. Hike south 7.7 miles through Rutland State Park back to East Hill Road. #11 Saturday, September 25: Meet 9 a.m. on trail crossing at 4H Club horse barns near Buck Hill in Spencer. From Worcester take Rte. 9 toward Spencer, opposite Ragsdale Chevrolet take right on Paxton Road for 1.4 miles.  Go left on Gold Nugget Rd for .6 miles, then right on McCormack Rd for 1.9 miles to 4-H Club parking lot on left. Leave some cars here and shuttle to East Hill Road off Pleasantdale Road in Rutland.  Hike south 5.2 miles through Treasure Valley and around Thompson Pond.  Leaders:  Mark Dubois* (tel. 508-853-9609) & Dave Sensenig (tel. 508-757-8052)

#12 Sunday, October 3: Meet at NOON near where trail crosses Route 9 in Spencer at Spencer Country Inn. Leave some cars here and shuttle to McCormack Road by 4-H Club horse barns near Buck Hill. Hike south over Moose Hill and across Moose Hill Reservoir dam back to Route 9, 6 miles. #13  Saturday, October 9: Meet 9 a.m. in Spencer where trail crosses near corner of East Charlton Road and G.H. Wilson Road. From Rte. 20, take Rte. 31 north 5.4 miles. Take right on Capon Road .4 miles to end.  Park at that corner; which is .1 mile north of GH Wilson Rd and trail crossing.  From Rte. 9, take Rte. 31 south.  Turn left on East Charlton Rd. to corner of  Capen Road. Leave some cars here and shuttle to Route 9 at Spencer Country Inn. Walk south by Audubon land and horse farms, 5.3 miles, back to G.H. Wilson Road. Plan on sticking around for lunch--an après-hike get-together and cook-out is being provided at the Green Mountain Club camp on Cedar Meadow Lake, off Rawson Street, in Leicester.  Leaders:  Jeanne Gilleney-Decenzo (tel. 508-852-6882 & Duke Charbonneau* (tel. 508-885-4387)

 

#14  Saturday, October 16: Meet 9 a.m. where trail crosses Route 20 in Charlton: From corner with Rte. 56, go west on Rte. 20 for 3.0 miles.  Take left at stoplight onto Worcester Rd. across from Auto Center (big tan building on right).  Go up road and bear left, past trail crossing, and park around cul-de-sac. Leave some cars here and drive to parking turn-off on East Charlton Road off Route 31. From here hike south 6.4 miles, ending with walk through cow tunnel under Route 20. #15  Saturday,  October 23: Meet 9 a.m. at end of Rocky Hill Road off Route 12 across from police station in Oxford, just north of town center. Leave some cars here and drive to trail crossing on (south side of) Route 20 in Charlton. From here hike south through Hodges Village Dam area to Rocky Hill Road, 5 miles. #16  Sunday, October 31: Meet at NOON at parking lot by church on Central Turnpike in West Sutton. Take Rte. 395 to Exit 4A, taking Sutton Ave. east (toward Sutton) for 3.2 miles to church on right.  From Rte. 146 take Central Turnpike toward Oxford 4.7 miles to church on left. Leave some cars and drive to end of Rocky Hill Road off Route12 across from police station in Oxford. Hike south 6.5 miles to West Sutton. #17  Saturday, November 6: Meet 9 a.m. at Route 16 trail crossing in Douglas.  Take Rte. 395 to exit 2.  Go east on Rte. 16 for 4.3 miles to state trail parking lot on right.  From Rte.146 and East Douglas, take Rte. 16 west.  Lot is on left, .9 miles past entrance to Wallum Lake/Douglas State Forest (Cedar St). Leave some cars there and shuttle to parking lot by church on Central Turnpike in West Sutton. Hike south to Route 16, 6.2 miles. #18  Saturday, November 13: Meet 9 a.m. on Rhode Island side of Wallum Lake. Take exit 2 off Route 395 onto Rte. 16. Head east on Rte. 16 for 5.2 miles to main entrance to Wallum Lake on right (from the east, take Rte. 146 and head west on Rte. 16 past East Douglas, look for Wallum Lake entrance on left). This is Cedar Street which later becomes Wallum Lake road and eventually RI Route 100   Follow Cedar St/Wallum Lake Rd for 4.0 miles to 2nd stop sign and take right. Go another 2.1 miles to first driveable right after Zamora Hospital. Go .1 mile and take right onto Buck Hill Road. Go 1.2 miles and Buck Hill Tower is on left—park directly opposite of tower on right. Leave some cars and shuttle to Route 16 in Douglas, where Midstate crosses road.
